St Nicholas CE Primary School

Class 1

Welcome to term 6

It’s hard to believe the final term of the year is already upon us….what an exciting journey we have had but it’s certainly not over yet!  The children have made such wonderful progress and are already showing us they are going to be super Year 2’s!

Our whole school learning focus for this term embraces the World Cup fever and our class have been designated the countries in Group A (Brazil, Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon). We will have mini-topics on each country and enjoy finding out about the different cultures. Much of our learning will have a math’s focus and the children will practice and enrich their growing mathematical skills in a range of real life contexts.

In Science, we will focus on Physical Processes and will investigate ‘light and dark’ as well as ‘sound and hearing’. In ICT we will explore computer based simulations and continue to develop our word processing and graphics skills as part of our topic work. We are planning a trip to Egleton at Rutland water with our Year 1 friends from Whissendine. The children will be able to participate in bug hunting, bird watching and pond dipping activities … let’s hope we have a sunny day for that one!

Our PE sessions will be on a Thursday for gymnastics and Friday for multi-skills with Premier Sports although it is imperative that full PE kits are in school every day for impromptu sports day practices when the weather permits! Class 1 and 2 have also been invited to a multi-skills festival on 8th July at Oakham School Athletics Ground which promises to be an exciting event. We also have a series of whole school art events planned for this term which the children will love.

Our Year 1 Phonics Screening Test will take place during the third week of this term. We have already sent you information about this but if you need to refresh your memories then do check out the link on our class webpage. Thank you for all the support you have given your child on their weekly homework activities and daily reading. Please do ensure you continue as it makes all the difference to your child’s confidence and progress! Weekly spellings will continue to come home and children will be tested every Thursday...they are doing so well now learning these at home! Thanks for all your efforts!

Finally, our learning behaviour focus for Term 6 is ‘being respectful’. The children will think about their treatment of others, being honest, having good manners, sharing with others and caring for our friends and the environment.

One last request, the weather is hotting up and it is so important that ALL children have asun hat and named water bottle in school EVERY day. Our children love exploring the outdoor learning environment throughout the whole day and we will take our learning outdoors at every opportunity this term so please ensure your child is well equipped!

As always we would like to thank you for your continued support.

Mrs Morton, Mrs Faulkonbridge and Mrs Norton.
