EYFS

Foundation Class 2020 – 2021

A huge St Nicholas Welcome to all of our New Starters (and their families!) in our Foundation Class. We wish everyone a very happy and exciting first year of school.

We will begin our year getting to know each other with a strong focus on our social and emotional wellbeing. Our first theme is called ‘Marvellous Me and School is Cool’ and we will be thinking about our learning in school and what we want to achieve over the course of the year, in conjunction with what we would like to learn about.

During Term 1, our time will be spent in our wonderful inside and outside classroom. We will be able to see our siblings and other friends from a distance, when they are outside for their breaktimes, but it is important that we keep to our ‘Bubbles’. In the Foundation classroom the children will not be expected to be 2 metres apart but they will be expected to respect personal space and that they are to avoid touching their friends. We will be teaching the children about their invisible rainbow. This is for them to imagine they have a rainbow coming out of them and that their friends are to avoid getting too close to it. We will discuss this with the children on the first day of school.

We will be busy deciding our classroom rules and learning the class routines. In Term 1 to become EPIC learners we will be focusing on our ‘Being Ready for learning’ R. To be Ready for learning means making sure you are in the right frame of mind and all your needs are met. Learners who are ready feel safe, display self-control, manage their time and look after their body.

The Phonic programme (Read Write Inc.) will begin this term. The children will love ‘Fred Time’! We will learn a sound daily in these clusters: m a s t p   i n p g o   c k u b   f e l h sh   r j v y w to begin with.

Maths activities will be focussing very much on assessing the children’s starting points during this term. Once this is completed we will begin our learning through our Marvellous Maths Sessions. We have developed an investigative approach to our maths sessions ensuring that we allow time for children to gain a deeper and richer understanding. Through developing their mathematical vocabulary we enable them with the mechanics to problem solve and reason as well as extend and question their learning.

Our annual ‘Sausage Sizzle’ has been postponed but we hope to have this event or similar later in the year.

Your child will be bringing home a Learning Log. We will add phonics sounds into this to practise at home as well as other information. Please could you ensure that this is returned to school every Thursday!

Please send your child in with a named pair of wellies that can stay on the rack, to be available every day, they are an essential part of a Water Voles uniform!

PE will begin from Friday 4th September. Please come to school in your PE Kit – Sports top, Sport shorts, Trainers, Jumper (school jumper is fine if you do not have a school hoodie) jogging bottoms on cooler days.

Keep up-to-date with our activities by following us on Class Dojo. We will also be using Class Dojo to send you pictures and information about how your child is getting on at school – these could be anything from when they learn something new, showing amazing team work, create something amazing etc. We love to share all of this information with you as it not only reminds you how fabulous your children are but also it is a great talking tool for when they come home and they can’t remember what they have done at school.

I hope the children have had fun filling in their booklet for school. Please could they bring this into school on the first day back where we can enjoy learning a little more about each child with their new classmates.

We are aware that this year is unlike years we have had in the past but want to assure you that we are always here should you need to discuss anything. You can contact me via Class Dojo or you can always email the school office who will pass information on to us.

We are looking forward to spending a really terrific year with your children.  Let the journey begin!
