St Nicholas CE Primary School

Class 2

Where our wellies take us!

This term our topic is “Where our wellies take us.” This is loosely based on the Michael Morpurgo book of the same name. We shall be looking closely at our environment and learning more about the nature living right under our noses. We shall be dipping into clips from the BBC Springwatch programme as appropriate so do keep an eye out for wildlife in your garden that your children could tell us about.

To develop this learning we shall go on two visits. On Wed 12th June we shall visit two farms in Rutland where we will fish in the stream, explore the hedgerows and learn more about how our food reaches our plates.

On Mon 1st July we shall travel a little further afield to visit the Osprey’s at Lyndon Nature Reserve at Rutland Water. Here we will learn more about a wide variety of wetland wildlife and explore a completely different habitat. Please take a look at the web link on our web page to see how the baby Ospreys is progressing. http://www.ospreys.org.uk/webcam/

By the time we visit them they will be just learning to fly. Very exciting.

Our role play area has moved and is slowly developing into a wildlife hide. Again, many thanks to the Towe family for the wonderful cargo net – the children love it.

Forest school

To fit our topic we shall be enjoying Forest school within the school grounds on a Tuesday afternoon this term (no charge). Please send your child with a change of clothes for this experience. We suggest long trousers, long sleeved top and boots.

PE

We have an extremely exciting term ahead for PE.

Tuesdays - We will continue to enjoy specialist PE coaching from FDS

Thursdays – We are extremely lucky to have Mrs Newton to coach gymnastics with our class. Her specialist skills and experience are a huge bonus.

Friday – We will continue to enjoy tennis sessions with Dan from Oakham tennis club.

Please could we ask that all children have a full named PE kit in school every day so that they are fully able to take advantage of these great opportunities.

Provisional date for sports day – Fri 12th July

Enrichment

Last term as part of our Learning to Learn curriculum we turned the planning of enrichment over to the children of Class 2. They decided what they wanted to do and learn and then planned when they would do it. As a result we all enjoyed scooter riding, cooking, we tried new sports and explored the village. The children really enjoyed this experience so we plan to repeat it. They will plan the sessions early in Term 6 and we shall let you know what adventures await us!

Hats, sun cream and water bottles

Hopefully the weather will mean that these are essential! Please make sure they are all named.

We love to hear about the personal achievements of our children so that we can celebrate them in school as well so please do let us know. Our doors are always open for chat over concerns or worries so please do come and see us.
